Evergreen, lanceolate, fresh green, small, finer than those of the varieties.

Habit: Impressive, columnar upright, 4-6 (7) m tall and wide, loose habit, fast growing, but slower than P. a. aureocaulis and P. a. spectabilis.
Leaves: Evergreen, lanceolate, fresh green, small, finer than those of the varieties.
Culms: Upright to slightly nodding, glaucous to olive, with yellow groove; occasionally greening.
Roots: Shallow, spreading with far creeping rhizomes, may produce large stands.
Demands: Sun to light shade, likes warmth, usually frost hardy up to -25° C; needs shelter from east wind.
Soil: Prefers fresh to moist soils; acidic to strongly alkaline; sandy-loamy to loamy.
