Single flowers the size of the palm of the hand, 5-7 cm in diameter, carmine to dark red, stamen conspicuous yellow; beginning of June; not fragrant.

Evergreen, large and broad, 10-25 cm long, 3-7 cm broad, bicoloured dark green with the onset of autumn, exhibiting conspicuous white margins like parchment.

Habit: Pygmy bamboo, 0.8 -1.2 m; bushy upright, dense and impenetrable ground covering, spreading caespitose, fast-growing.
Leaves: Evergreen, large and broad, 10-25 cm long, 3-7 cm broad, bicoloured dark green with the onset of autumn, exhibiting conspicuous white margins like parchment.
Culms: Shallow, far-reaching root system, invasive; wide spreading; grown on pastures in Japan like normal gras, rhizome barrier recommended; growing manner as Hypericum calycinum or Rosa nitida.
Demands: Sun to semi-shade, normal to cool, moderately frost hardy up to -23°C; likes high humidity, tolerates wind.
Soil: Moderately dry to very damp; acidic to alkaline, in all nutritious soils.
